Frederick Goodall R.A. was a distinguished Victorian-era British painter, celebrated for his Orientalist scenes and academic realism. Born in London in 1822, Goodall was the son of the engraver Edward Goodall, which exposed him early to the world of fine art and craftsmanship. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools, where he developed a disciplined academic style grounded in careful observation, strong composition, and refined technique.
Goodall first gained recognition for historical and genre scenes, but his career took a defining turn after traveling extensively to Egypt and the Middle East beginning in the 1850s. He spent long periods living among local communities, studying daily life, architecture, costume, and landscape firsthand—an approach that distinguished his work from more imaginary or studio-based Orientalist painters.
His paintings often depict Bedouins, desert landscapes, camels, and scenes along the Nile, rendered with a calm dignity and naturalism rather than theatrical exoticism. Goodall was particularly admired for his sensitive treatment of light, atmospheric depth, and narrative subtlety, aligning his work with the highest standards of Victorian Academic Realism.
In recognition of his artistic achievements, Goodall was elected a Royal Academician (R.A.) in 1863, and he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy for decades. His works were widely collected during his lifetime and remain held in major public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and other prominent British institutions.
Today, Frederick Goodall R.A. is regarded as one of the leading figures of 19th-century British Orientalist painting, valued for his authenticity, technical excellence, and enduring contribution to Victorian art.

After having exhibited numerous works at the Royal Academy and winning awards, Goodall traveled to Egypt 1858 and again in 1870.
He worked throughout his life, with the Egyptian scenes featuring prominently. His work was highly sought after and appreciated - especially his plein-air work from his adventurous travels to Egypt. He accumulated a considerable amount of wealth and more importantly died as a highly respected artist.
