Very good condition
Gato de Lema was a spanish landscape painter. He was born in Madrid, where he studied with Don Vicente Lopez at the Academy of San Fernando.
He exhibited at the 1855 Paris Exposition (two views of the Balsain Palace (La Granja) and The Ruins of San Juan de los Reyes). He also exhibited at the 1856 Madrid Exposition, where he presented six landscapes, which earned him an honorable mention. Appointed a full member of the Academy of San Fernando in 1859, he was also a knight of the Order of Charles III and a member of the African Institute and the Archaeological and Historical Society of Charente.
As a romantic landscape painter, Gato de Lema is known for his compositions depicting monuments, ruins, and seaside landscapes in the 1840s and 1850s. Our painting is a beautiful gouache depicting the sea with a harbor in the distance and a big church. In the foreground, numerous figures enlivening the composition. A picturesque landscape rendered with beautiful light and numerous details.

French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...
