About the Item

George William Mote (1832–1909) Landscape with Cattle on a Country Path, 1887 A luminous and richly detailed late-19th-century landscape by George William Mote, dated 1887, showcasing the artist’s mastery of serene pastoral scenes. The composition opens onto a sweeping valley bathed in warm, diffused light, with a pair of tall pines anchoring the left side of the scene. Below, a small herd of cows walks along a narrow country path, gently animating the foreground and guiding the viewer’s eye into the rolling countryside beyond. In the middle distance, a village nestles among the trees, adding depth and narrative charm to the view. Mote’s skillful handling of atmospheric color; soft blues, amber skies, and verdant earth tones, beautifully captures the tranquility of rural England at the height of the Victorian era. Artist Biography George William Mote (1832–1909) was an English landscape painter admired for his lyrical portrayals of rural life. Born in Surrey, Mote began his working life as a gardener and steward for the Earl of Lovelace at Horsley Towers, where the surrounding woodlands and parkland inspired his artistic pursuits. Entirely self-taught, he developed a refined technique grounded in keen observation and a deep appreciation for nature. From the mid-19th century onward, Mote exhibited frequently in London at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. His works are celebrated for their tranquil compositions, naturalistic detail, and gentle romanticism; qualities that continue to appeal to collectors of Victorian landscape painting.
