About the Item

Harbour at Finistiere, France by Georges Eugène DELHOMME (1904-1989) * see notes below signed oil on canvas, framed framed: 38 x 46 inches canvas: 32 x 39 inches Provenance: the artists estate sale, South of France Condition: very sound condition. * artists notes: In 1920, at the age of 16, Georges Eugène Delhomme was admitted to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He drew at the Jardin des Plantes fauverie, where he made friends with animal sculptor François Pompon. In 1922, he joined Eugène Morand's studio at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His fellow students were Jospeh Inguimberty, Raymond Leugueult and Maurice Brianchon. He also met François Desnoyers and Roland Odot. Alongside his training, the young painter sought further advice from Maurice Denis, Georges Desvallières and Pierre Bonnard. In the 1920s, he won medals and the Ephrussi Fellowship on two occasions, and held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Druet in Paris. During the years 1927-1932, he frequented the circus, music hall, opera, cabaret, guinguette and Marne riverbanks, which he knew so well from having frequented, lived in and loved. He was entrusted with several commissions, including the decoration of the patio wall of the Pavillon du Luminaire for the 1937 Universal Exhibition, entitled "L'Homme créa la lumière artificielle" ("Man created artificial light"). In the 1950s, he was commissioned by Lancôme to work on the "Petits lits blancs" show and the ballet "Trésor et magie".
