About the Item

A beautiful oil painting on canvas by the French artist Georges Gerbier, depicting a tremendously vivid and alive street scene from Paris in the 20th Century with a view of "Maxims Cafe" is depicted with figures stepping out of a taxi going toward the cafe. Cars fill the street and buildings and fountain are in the distance. An absolutely great work of the times, capturing an ever so fleeting moment from over a century ago. The details are magnificent as Gerbier captures the architecture of Paris so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. This painting is signed lower left and it comes housed in an antique decorated gold tone giltwood frame with wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 13 x 18 inches Frame measures 17 x 23 inches Georges Gerbier was a French painter born in 1906, known for impressionist street scenes depicting popular locations in Europe. With the use of vibrant colors and impressionistic brushwork done with both whim and daring, his work is comparable to those of Jean Salabet, Jules Herve, Antoine Blanchard, and Edouard Cortes. Gerbier was mostly active and lived in France, and he died in 1983. PROVENANCE: Private collection Litchfield, CT; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.
