About the Item
1930s French Impressionist Barbizon School oil on panel view a port by Georges Guerin (1910-1984). The painting is not signed but was acquired with a collection of other signed paintings from the artists atelier. To the back of the board is another marine sketch of the same scene with chalk outline.
A very charming port scene, possibly Brittany in Northern France. Guerin has achieved a wonderful play between light and shade, the monumentality of the tower and surrounding with their bright facades and terracotta tiled rooves. In the foreground the colourful sailboats in the harbour waiting to voyage out to the sea.
Guerin is noted for his landscapes, seascapes, as well as for his Paris street scenes and views of the Brittany coast.
