About the Item
Painting of a Beach Promenade, with Palm Trees, perhaps the City of Nice nearby. The painting is signed and dated 1921. The artist Guido Van Extergem is only little known so far. Details about his ife and carreer are rare. On the back of this painting there are the dates of his life and a description of his influences (Matisse and Derain e.g.). He also should have exhibited in the city of Nice, France. Regarding the depicted subject, it seems likely that the scene was drawn in France, nearby the Sea, perhaps in Nice/ Cannes or somewhere else at the Cote D' Azur.
The quality of the painting is remarkable. It shows indeed the style and quality which can also be found among other painters from the beginning of the 20th Century and the expressionism. We look at several palm trees and the sea, whether sunrise or sunset is not quite clear. The picture is determined by the palm trees, only in the background we guess a city. It is remarkable that it was created after the First World War and is perhaps to be understood as a longing picture.
