About the Item
French Expressionist oil on canvas of a river and mountain landscape by Gisele Grant-Gapail. The painting is initialled bottom right, signed and dated to the back of the canvas and titled to the back stretcher.
An impactful and strong painting of the valley of the river Durance in southern France. Gapail has created a cacophony of colour using strong brush and palette strokes in a perpendicular fashion to create an impasto technique to the canvas. She has created a wonderful sense of strength and movement that invite us in to the perspective of her landscape.
Taking its source in the heart of the Southern Alps, in Montgenèvre, the Durance travels more than 320 kilometres before flowing into the Rhône at Avignon. While its long tumultuous course has shaped the landscape, its waters have also irrigated fertile land and given rise to many villages.
Expressionism is a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating in Northern Europe around the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. Expressionist artists have sought to express the meaning of emotional experience rather than physical reality.
