Surrealist acrylic painting on cut paper and wood panel featuring classical statue fragments and a resting cat in a saturated pink and crimson landscape. This original work by Gozo Collective stages a poetic encounter between historical memory and domestic irreverence. Amid scattered sculptural remains, a cat naps calmly on the torso of a Roman figure, disrupting the solemn atmosphere with quiet irony and tenderness.
Part of the Fragments series, the painting explores themes of ruin, coexistence, and the absurdity of time. Drawing from metaphysical painting and early surrealism—particularly echoing Giorgio de Chirico—Gozo reimagines archaeological relics as theatrical props suspended in an artificial, dreamlike space. The irregular torn edges of the paper evoke erosion or excavation, while the crimson horizon deepens the visual tension between presence and absence, decay and peace.
Executed with acrylic and spray paint on paper mounted to a shaped wooden support, the piece floats slightly off the wall, casting sculptural shadows that intensify its objecthood. Ideal for display with directional lighting, this work can be shown individually or paired with others in a modular installation.
