About the Item

Sandycove I Acrylic on Canvas 46 x 38cm A fresh modern cubist view of the Irish seaside town of Sandycove, blending sharp geometry with soft Atlantic tones. This acrylic on canvas (46 x 38 cm) offers a stylised view of the seaside village of Sandycove, adjacent to the well-known swimming "Forty Foot" landmark, just south of Dublin, a location also famously linked to James Joyce and known for its literary and maritime heritage. In Sandycove I, Greg Mathias captures the iconic Irish coastline in a distinctive cubisme analytique approach, diverging from his signature diachronic cubism. Here, the seaside architecture and natural shoreline are distilled into intersecting lines, angular forms, and flattened perspective. The palette is light and open: airy blues, crisp greens, and luminous whites, offering a sense of breezy clarity that evokes summer along the Irish coast. The two seated figures near the water’s edge bring a human touch to this almost dreamlike composition. Painted during one of many Mathias’s trips to Ireland, visiting his daughter who was studying in Blackrock, close to Sandycone, this work was part of a special exhibition showcasing his impressions of Ireland. Here, instead of layering different moments in time, as he typically does, Mathias opts for a single contemplative moment—rendered with the analytical precision and fragmented geometry characteristic of early 20th-century Cubism. This work was included in Mathias’s Irish series exhibited in 2024, which explored iconic locations in Ireland through the lens of Cubism. Perfect For: Collectors of Irish art and modern cubism, or buyers seeking fresh, contemporary coastal landscapes. Well-suited for beach houses, summer homes, or Dublin-inspired interiors. Also ideal for those furnishing countryside or seaside secondary residences with distinctive French contemporary art. Keywords: Greg Mathias, Diachronic Cubism, Irish coastal art, Sandycove painting, Irish modernism, Dublin art, contemporary Irish landscape, abstract village scene, cubist seascape, Irish series, Irish exhibition 2024, coastal homes decor, French artist, seaside painting. About the artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of ENSBA Paris, is a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism, an evolution of Cubism that captures movement and time within a single frame. His works have been exhibited at Sotheby’s Périgueux, and galleries in Paris, New York, and Dublin. Since 2020, Mathias has designed posters for the United Nations (WFUNA), making him the first French artist to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. "10h à Royan, by Grégoire Mathias – Modern Cubist Beach Scene
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
10h à Royan (10am in Royan) Acrylic on canvas board Dimensions (unframed): 27 x 22 cm Signed lower left Condition: Excellent, presented in a gilded wooden frame with linen inlay In 10h à Royan, Grégoire Mathias captures a serene moment of seaside life through the geometric precision and rhythmic energy that define his Diachronic Cubism. Set against the vivid blues of the Atlantic coast, a figure enjoys a quiet morning coffee as sun and sea interplay in harmonious color blocks. The composition’s strong lines and vibrant contrasts evoke both warmth and movement — the golden light of morning, the hum of conversation, and the timeless rhythm of a day beginning by the ocean. Mathias’s refined Cubist language transforms this simple scene into a layered meditation on leisure and perception, blending abstraction with recognizable forms. Executed in acrylic on canvas board and signed lower left, the painting balances structure and spontaneity, revealing the artist’s unique ability to merge classic Cubist heritage with contemporary clarity. Perfect for: Collectors of modern French Cubism and/or Mediterranean themed scenes Interior designers seeking colorful, geometric compositions for coastal or contemporary spaces Buyers looking for affordable, original works by a rising French modernist Collector's Insights Small-format works like this represent an ideal entry point into Mathias’s oeuvre.
