About the Item

A beautiful oil on canvas painting by American artist Gregory Sievers, capturing a romantic and atmospheric scene of the boulevard near the Champs-Élysées with the Eiffel Tower under a pastel pink and lavender sky. A romantic, and slightly melancholic, rainy Paris at its most cinematic, with a color palette balancing cool blues, grays, greens, warm ambers, golds, and rosy tones. An iconic Morris Column of Paris illuminates colorful posters and advertisements, casting a rich, golden-yellow warmth that contrasts beautifully with the cool, wet surroundings. A flower seller sits with a vibrant, colorful array of blooms in baskets beside her, with bright pops of red, yellow, purple, and white against the muted tones, with a horse-drawn carriage in the background. The ground glistens with reflections from recent rain, mirroring the lampposts, trees, and people in shimmering puddles that enhance the luminous, almost impressionistic quality. A cozy feeling of a peaceful Parisian ambiance in late afternoon as several elegantly dressed figures stroll along the tree-lined promenade with lush green foliage and framed by the classic Parisian street lamps that glow warmly through the damp air of a drizzly day. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. The details are magnificent as he captures the architecture of Paris so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The painting is signed by the artist lower left and titled on the upper edge of the canvas verso. It comes housed in a beautiful, classic, ornate gold leaf finish wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 48 x 36 inches Frame measures 56.25 x 44.25 inches Gregory Sievers is a renowned American who was born in 1951 and is based in Idaho, United States. Sievers' works are primarily oil on canvas, blending detailed observation with expressive, loose, textured, and luminous brushwork inspired by impressionist traditions. Sievers' formal Education and training were based in the western United States, earning an Associate of Fine Arts Degree in 1976 from Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) in Rexburg, Idaho. Shortly after, in 1979, he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and his graduate thesis focused on still lifes depicting aspects of the early American West to obtain a Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1982 from Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He is particularly noted for his evocative depictions of Parisian scenes—such as flower markets, cathedrals, and iconic boulevards—often rendered with a focus on light, reflections, and impressionistic textures. Early in his career, he received a commission in 1980 to paint two works depicting José de Gálvez, an early Spanish conquistador, in Almos, Mexico. He emphasizes light and atmosphere in his compositions, often stating, “I try to have a sense of light in everything I do. I live by the phrase, art gives meaning to life.” His subjects have evolved over time. Early works often featured Western and pioneer-themed scenes, including camps, landscapes, and historical American frontier elements drawn from his Rocky Mountain upbringing. And in more recent decades, as he traveled extensively in Europe, Sievers focused on plein air painting in cities like Paris, Venice, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Budapest, Strasbourg, Prague, and regions such as the French and Italian Rivieras, England, and Wales. This has led to a strong body of work celebrating European street life, architecture, and markets, including many romantic Parisian views with wet pavements, glowing lamps, and vibrant floral displays. In 1996, he was appointed by the Governor of Idaho to serve as a Commissioner on the Idaho Commission on the Arts, and he also served on the Policy and Planning Board for the period of 1996–1997, and as Chair of the Individual Artists Committee in 1997. Sievers continues to produce work that bridges American Western heritage with the timeless charm of European cities, appealing to collectors who appreciate luminous, narrative-driven realism with an impressionistic flair, and his paintings have been exhibited at events such as the ‘Celebration of Fine Art’ in Scottsdale, Arizona, among others. PROVENANCE: Private collection Chadds Ford, Pensilvania; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.
