About the Item
Nicolas II is a unique painting by French contemporary artist Guillaume Chansarel. The painting is made with ink and acrylic on old book pages mounted on canvas, dimensions are 50 x 100 cm (19.7 × 39.4 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This artwork captures a nocturnal Parisian street scene composed on multiple levels. The eye is drawn to the striking contrast between a steeply sloping street and a broad flight of stone stairs rising toward a building on the right. This interplay of planes generates a strong sense of depth and visual tension.
The surrounding façades—painted in subdued hues of cream, beige, and soft yellow—glow subtly against the darkness of the night. At the centre, a streetlamp radiates a warm, concentrated light that highlights the stairs, the stone wall, and the lower façades, revealing the geometry and texture of the architecture with remarkable precision.
The series to which this work belongs is devoted to exploring the nocturnal atmosphere of the French capital. Guillaume Chansarel investigates the delicate interplay of urban light and the underlying structures that shape Parisian streets and buildings. Through meticulously controlled lines and a refined handling of contrast, he creates a striking illusion of depth and perspective. His restrained palette, dominated by neutral tones, reinforces the clarity and immediacy of each composition.
Focusing primarily on megacities, Chansarel employs his figurative approach as a means of visual documentation—capturing the urban landscape with the same sense of immediacy and precision that a photographer achieves at the instant of releasing the shutter.

Guillaume Chansarel (Guiyome)
Through his compositions, Guillaume Chansarel aims to capture the soul and the spirit of a place. He catches the essence of a city and depicts an atmosphere on the canvas by immortalizing a single street corner. He is interested in Architecture, but also in its graphical representation, in the constructions of perspective and how perspective can deepen an architectural subject. The originality of Guillaume Chansarel’s work also derives from his use of pages from old books as a raw material for his paintings. At first used at random, this painting medium is now a distinctive element of his work. “I especially enjoy working on mega-cities. I like the idea that the city totally overtakes me, thinking it has been there for a long time, it was there and it’s still growing.“
