About the Item
This is a Limited Austrian Edition, signed on plate, published by Austria-Klimt Villa Gallery in 2012 ( seal in the picture); Giclee printed on high quality heavy Museum Board. The print is in mint condition, sold without frame.
The measurement of the paper included margin at the edges.
( 48 x 48 cm is the paper size, image size is 35.5 x 35 cm ) , the painting was acquired directly from Klimt Villa Gallery for our GSY House Collection.
About the painting:
The painting is notable for its radical, almost abstract, composition, which dedicates nearly the entire square canvas to the surface of the water using shimmering strokes of turquoise, green, and grey to give the impression of movement and light. The shoreline of Litzlberg Island is only visible in the upper right corner, and there is no clear horizon line, a bold and unusual approach for its time.
Klimt painted this piece during a summer vacation at Lake Attersee in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, a place he visited frequently. This and similar landscapes from the period demonstrate his break from traditional landscape painting and show parallels with Impressionism and Japanese art influences. The painting was first exhibited at the tenth Secession exhibition in 1901 and was met with enthusiasm by contemporary critics.

Gustav Klimt (14 July 1862 – 6 February 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession movement.
His work helped define the Art Nouveau style in Europe. Klimt is known for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objects d'art. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism.
Amongst his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. He is best known for The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods.

This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island.
This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern." Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683.
