About the Item
An extraordinary marine painting by Wolcott from the early 20th Century depicting a tranquil harbor scene with an Italian Fishing Boat in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The composition transports the viewer to a vanished era, capturing a chilly morning as figures prepare an Italian fishing boat docked at a weathered wooden pier. Beneath the pier's rope-draped pilings, calm waters reflect the surrounding structures in subtle, rippled patterns. Rendered in a loose, impressionistic style, the piece utilizes bold, textured brushstrokes and a subdued palette of earthy greens, muted reds, and soft blues. A hazy, overcast sky with scattered clouds and seagulls fades into the horizon, enhancing the sense of quiet movement. This thick application of paint and thoughtful color placement evokes a serene, nostalgic atmosphere. The painting is double signed lower left
right and titled on verso by the artist. It comes housed in elegant brown burlwood frame with linen liner and gold lip, with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Harold Wolcott was born in New York in 1898 and served in WWI and later worked as a stockbroker. His first art-related job was as an advertising graphic artist. He studied at the Art Students' League in NY and the National Academy of Design under Hans Hoffman. In the late 1940s, he left his advertising job to devote more time to painting. He then moved from Scarsdale, NY, to Southport, CT, in 1949, when he began giving classes. He served as the Art Director of the Hudson River Museum for more than 12 years and continued to teach art. He was represented by Grand Central Art Gallery in NY, as well as Portraits, Inc., and the Bendann Art Gallery of Baltimore. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club of NY, Silvermine Guide of Artists in CT, Springfield Art Association of MA, Hudson Valley Art Association, and the National Academy of Design. He received the Louis Seeley Purchase Award in 1960 from the Salmagundi Club Annual Exhibition, and more than 20 other local and national awards. Wolcott had more than a dozen one-man shows in his lifetime. Mallett's "Index of Artists" shows him exhibiting in 1935 at White Plains, NY, and he was best known as a portrait artist apparently, as well as landscapes, generally with architectural elements in them. Harold Wolcott died in 1977.
