About the Item
Beautiful midcentury impasto landscape in warm autumnal tones of small figures walking through the fall woods by Harold Landaker (American, 1892-1966). Signed "H. Landaker" lower right and on verso "H. Landaker Pacific Grove, Calif.", "The Long road Home". Displayed in a painted wood frame with linen fillet. Image size: 16"H x 19.5"L.
Harold Landaker was born in Ohio in 1892. His early studies included time spent at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he met his wife, artist Mabel Holtz Landaker, with whom he later joined a traveling circus. Both were involved in painting sets, and decorations for the circus environment. Landaker moved to Southern California in 1940 where he landed a job with MGM studies.
In the mid to late 1940's Landaker relocated to the Monterey Peninsula where he joined the Carmel Art Association. His wife, Mabel, was also a member. He became very active in the local art scene, and finally settled in the small town of Pacific Grove. He is well known for his whimsical renditions of circus characters, birds, and other animals. Landaker died in Monterey on November 6, 1966.
