About the Item
A fine impressionist oil painting of a New England harbor scene with boats and fishermen by American artist Harry Aiken Vincent (1867-1933). Vincent was born in Chicago, Illinois, and was a vital part of the Rockport art colony, serving as its first president and making it his home. In 1918, he went to Rockport where he lived on the edge of Inner Harbor. Despite trips to France and Germany where he studied and painted, he was considered a self-taught artist with a penchant for bold impressionistic marine and waterfront scenes. Little is known about his early life, and there is uncertainty about his birth date. Most sources cite 1864. His work was well-received in exhibitions at New York's National Academy and the Salmagundi Club in the early 1900s, with most of them being marine paintings. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, artist placard lower center, and housed in a molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 15.25 in H x 22.13 in W, actual, 23.13 in H x 30 in W x 2 in D, framed. Ref: 8

He established a studio on Rocky Neck in East Gloucester where he taught plein-air classes.
