Buena Vista Aquaduct and Southern Pacific Train Los Angeles 1916 by Harry Bailey Dramatic and significant historical watercolor of the Buena Vista Viaduct 1916 (North Broadway Bridge) by Harry Lewis Bailey (American,1879 - 1933). Vehicles and pedestrians cross the bridge and a steam engine train chugs beneath the Aquaduct bridge. Buena Vista Viaduct, 1st, bridge to use Beau-Arts architectural design elements in California. The bridge featured Beaux-Arts architectural details including reinforced concrete hand rails with octagonal balusters, ornamental light standards, twelve rounded, viewing balconies, a portico, and pylons with massive, fluted columns on high square pedestals. Many of the Beaux-Arts details were removed ca. 1960 but replaced in the late 1990s as part of a seismic retrofit and rehabilitation project. Current nae of the bridge is Los Angeles River BOH or the north Broadway Bridge Los Angeles. Sheet 14"H x 13"W Image window, 11.5"H x 10.5"W Frame, 19.75" x 18.88 Harry Lewis Bailey was born in St Louis, MO on Dec. 2, 1879. Bailey was educated at the St Louis School of Fine Arts. Due to health problems he relocated to southern California about 1907. After a few years in Ocean Park, he settled in Los Angeles. Life was difficult for artists during the 1930s. With his art career on hold, he worked in a furniture store until his suicide on May 17, 1933. Member: Calif. Society of Etchers; Calif. PM Society.
