I wonderful depiction of a tranquil Scottish farmstead.
An understated piece which enhances the quality of the craftsmanship, the way Chalmers is able to make such a simple scene carry so much strength. In the way similar Scottish artists like James Lawton Windgate were able to do.

He studied at Edinburgh at Trustees Academy with Mc Taggart and lived in the city all his life.
Although he started off doing a lot of figurative and genre work he mainly painted landscapes and topographical work- these he did in both oils and watercolours.
His landscapes have been described as “straightforward”, but they were also very attractive and often contained figures that were incorporated harmoniously with their surroundings. He was also very fond of harvest scenes- especially in the Tayside area.
Chalmers was a member of the Scottish Art Club and was made its president between 1922 and 1924. He was a very prolific artist exhibiting 176 works in the Royal Scottish Academy alone. His other exhibits include: 68 in the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, 5 in the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours, 2 in the Royal Hibernian Academy and 2 in the Agnew and Sons Gallery.
