About the Item

Helen M. Goodwin (1865 - 1955) Nantucket, Massachusetts Oil on canvas laid on panel 12 x 16 inches Signed and titled lower right Helen M. Goodwin was born in New Castle, Indiana in 1865. Like many young women artists of her day she went to New York to study at the Art Students League and then on to Paris to study at the Academie Julian. While in Paris she also attended classes with painter Charles Hoffbauer. Upon her return to the United States Goodwin visited the thriving artists' community of Provincetown, Massachusetts where she took classes with the popular teacher Charles Webster Hawthorne. She also attended summer classes at the Shinnecock Summer School of William Merritt Chase. Goodwin exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, from 1907-1911; Art Institute of Chicago, 1913 and in 1925 at the Hoosier Salon in her home state of Indiana where she won a prize for her work. She was an active member of the Indiana Art Club; Provincetown Art Association; Women's Art Association, Paris and the Hoosier Salon. She was known to have also exhibited under the name Goodwin-Paine. Goodwin was a close friend of Hoosier Salon painter T.C. Steele and his wife Selma, also an artist. She is referenced in the 2004 publication, Skirting the Issue: Stories of Indiana's Historical Women Artists, by Judith Vale Newton.

"Wellfleet, Cape Cod, " Gerrit Beneker, American Impressionism, Provincetown
By Gerrit Beneker
Located in New York, NY
Gerrit Beneker (1882 - 1934) Wellfleet, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, New England, 1926 Oil on canvas 20 x 16 inches Signed, titled, and dated lower left Provenance: Louis H. Barnett, Fort Worth, Texas In 1905, Gerrit Beneker began his art career as an illustrator. He married Flora Judd, his high school sweetheart from Grand Rapids and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Gerrit's early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. As such, he had no interest in painting portraits of pretty women, which were so often seen on the magazine covers of the day. Rather he wanted to seek out workingmen on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of NYC, and paint them in their environments. He completed over 150 magazine covers, numerous ads including many for Ivory Soap...
