About the Item
This colorful and powerful seascape might help to brighten your walls and room. It is of Bass Rocks in Gloucester Massachusetts. Artist Helen Marie Stockton used bold turquoise colors to render the surf and open sea and present a somewhat modern work. Rendered in oil on board, the brushstrokes are confident and well composed. It’s a bright summer day and the waves are putting on their typical action-packed show.
Artist Helen Stockton was born in 1889 in New Jersey. She was a direct descendant of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Additionally, her grandfather was a US senator. Miss Stockton graduated from Columbia University. She seemed to summer often in New England and clearly had a passion for seaside landscapes and adjacent town scenes.
This work is oil on board and measures 20” x 24”. It is signed on the front and noted on the back. It is in very good condition and retains its original carved wood frame of the period. The frame is painted a silvered gold and seems to suit the painting well. There is minor age related, but expected, wear to the frame. Overall framed dimensions are 25” x 29”.
This ca 1950 seascape was likely painted on location at Bass Rocks by Helen Stockton. It is ready to hang on the wall of your choice, seventy five years later, and for you to enjoy for years to come.

Vintage Edgartown Harbor, Martha’s Vineyard Oil Painting; James King Bonnar 1960
By James King Bonnar
Located in Baltimore, MD
This painting, by listed artist James King Bonnar (1884-1961), is a lovely scene of Edgartown Harbor, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. It dates to ca 1960, towards the end of his career. There is a lot of action and detail presented, as the harbor is busy, likely in full summer season. The variety of boats, men working them and an abundance of rigging fill the composition. Bonnar, however, left enough of the foreground water clear to show off his skills of reflection and slight movement to the water. Full sail boats glide past in the background. A hillside of Edgartown is depicted beyond, with a few of its buildings highlighted. The sky is blue with just a hint of high clouds...

Minor craquelure in white impasto areas of the surf. Frame abrasion in upper and lower edges of canvas. A few pinpoints of in-paint show up under UV.
This scene looks to me to be Black Head, on Monhegan perhaps, as Burns visited the island to draw, etc. as listed below.
