"The Little Lake" by Helen Steele is a 36" x 60" mixed media creation that embodies the fluidity and introspection of contemporary landscape abstraction. A soft symphony of blues, greys, and earthy browns swathes the canvas, reflecting the quietude of a dawn-lit sky mirrored in a still lake. Accents of gold and pale rose suggest the first light of day touching the earth, invoking a sense of calm and renewal. Steele's piece, with its expansive canvas and tranquil palette, offers a moment of pause, a breath of serenity in the continuous flow of time.
About the Artist:
Helen Steele was born in a small town in the southern mountainous region of Germany. She spent her youth exploring nature with a sketchbook in hand. In high school, she participated in an exchange program in France, which opened her eyes to the wider world. Helen studied art education at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, one of the most prestigious universities in Europe. She received her master’s degree in 1986. She immigrated to America in 1987, first moving to Los Angeles before settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she raised her children and started her art career.
She was trained in artistic techniques, which include painting, printmaking, encaustic, ceramics, and fiber arts. Her work explores the human soul, a witnessing of the human spirit. Her approach was intuitive and suggestive rather than detailed. Helen was the recipient of multiple awards and grants, including the Denis Diderot A-i-R art residency grant at Chateau d’Orquevaux in France, an art residency at Green Olive Arts in Tetouan Morocco, and the Wendy Gruber Grant in Marin, CA. Her work was also published in American Art Collector Magazine and featured on Marin Magazine’s front cover. Her work is shown by several galleries in the United States and abroad and can be found in many private collections.

Artist Statement: My compositions are never preconceived, yet my themes are recurrent: the use of the figure as the means of investigating various psychological states: harmony, serenity, anxiety, and isolation... The figure is my starting point, not my true subject. My subjects are human presence and absence. My approach is intuitive, suggesting rather than detailing. As I work and rework my canvas the image appears sometimes only to elude me then to reassert itself much later. I work in multiple layers with buried images and words. paint is wiped off and layers are peeled yielding the emerging image. Symbolic markings, personal imagery, shapes, and words appear, and questions arise. Intimacy is translated through the sensuality of line, the simplest and subtlest of my tools. The line can be bold and assertive or sublime and quite sensual. "Sunrise Beyond the River" 2024
Oil Paint, Wood

This striking 22" x 38" abstract oil painting by Kristy Chettle captures the raw energy of nature through vibrant, expressive color. Painted directly onto reclaimed wood, the artwork showcases her unique approach to using natural materials, allowing the texture of the wood grain to become an integral part of the piece. The rich, fiery hues of orange, red, and yellow swirl across the surface, evoking a sense of dynamic movement and shifting light. The cooler tones of blues and blacks provide contrast, creating depth and intrigue. Chettle’s distinctive technique, where she applies the paint using only her hands, adds an organic, tactile quality to the work, making it both visceral and immersive. This piece beautifully represents her ability to blend color, form, and texture into an emotional and evocative abstract composition.
About the Artist:
As a California native (b. 1968, Los Angeles, CA), Kristy Chettle’s paintings explore reflective and thought-provoking themes of nature, transformation, and self-empowerment.
Using only her hands and an occasional pallet knife, she paints in multiple layers, sometimes scraping off the paint with her fingers only to reapply a new color later, resulting in a deep texture and raw motion. Occasionally she scrawls her thoughts and emotions into the canvas or uses recycled paper or old screens...
