About the Item
Beautiful oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Henri Alexis Schaeffer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking along the street and sidewalk with cars by Place de la Concorde at midday. The water from the fountains flicker and reflect on the surroundings, and magic is being felt. The details are magnificent as Schaeffer captures the architecture of Paris so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. This piece is signed by the artist lower right and it comes housed in a gold tone Mid-Century wood frame with hanging wire ready on verso to be displayed.
Art measures 13 x 16 inches
Frame measures 16 x 20 inches
Henri Alexis Schaeffer was born in Paris, France in 1900. He studied at the famous Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under the great master Cormon. Schaeffer’s earlier paintings consisted primarily of architectural studies of classical monuments and religious landmarks. He was a member of and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1934. Schaeffer mainly painted urban Parisien scenes.
Schaeffer was a Post-Impressionist, the art movement following Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism. The style showed a greater concern for expression, structure, and form than did Impressionism. While the use of light is still important, it is strong and focused, as opposed to soft and diffused and the use of color is also strong and pure.
Henri Alexis Schaeffer remained in Paris throughout his life and died there in 1975. The artist was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1934.
PROVENANCE: Private collection Connecticut; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

Place de la Concorde, Paris
Oil on canvas, circa 1980
25 x 28 inches (framed)
This vibrant view of the Place de la Concorde in Paris captures the bustling life and atmosphere of one of the city’s most celebrated landmarks. At the centre is the magnificent Fontaine des Mers, its cascades rendered with lively brushwork, while beyond rises the monumental Luxor Obelisk, a gift from Egypt in the 1830s that remains a defining feature of the square. The architectural backdrop of the Hôtel de Crillon and the Hôtel de la Marine situates the scene firmly within the grandeur of Paris’s historic heart.
Painted with broad, impressionistic strokes, the artist animates the square with colourful figures in motion, their bright coats enlivening the composition and evoking the vibrancy of Parisian life. The fluid handling of paint and expressive use of colour are hallmarks of M. Leveque, a painter of mid- to late-20th century Paris street scenes...
