About Henri-André Martin
Born in Lyon in 1918, Henri-André Martin spent his youth in Saint-Étienne, where his father served as a physician in the region’s anti-tuberculosis services. Although Martin began medical studies in Lyon and went on to a distinguished career as an ENT specialist and professor at the Édouard-Herriot Hospital, painting remained his life’s true passion.
A naturally reserved and modest personality, Martin expressed his emotions most freely through art. Wherever he traveled—and whenever time allowed—he painted gouaches and oils, sometimes intimate in scale, sometimes large and ambitious. His early landscapes, beaches, and urban scenes have been compared to Boudin, yet Martin’s work reveals a deeper interest in materiality and mood rather than literal depiction. His Parisian walls, Provençal views, railway switchyards, Venetian canals, and beached boats often evoke a sense of introspection and gravity.
Over time, his style evolved toward more synthesis and simplification. His powerful series of almond trees, olive trees, and Provençal landscapes reveal an increasingly symbolic approach. The pivotal moment in his œuvre came with his extensive work on the olive tree, which led to the creation of the “Trunks” lithographic plates and the book L’Olivier, containing lithographs, serigraphs, poetry, and numerous paintings. In 1976, René Déroudille wrote of this period:
“There is a lyrical sap that carries the artist and pushes him to define the beloved trees of Provence in a different way.”
The late 1970s and 1980s brought intense activity, producing large, colorful canvases exhibited notably in a major 1988 show at the Maison de Lyon. Bernard Gouttenoire wrote in Hebdo Lyon (June 1979):
“The fields of colza or lavender abundantly fill the canvas… There could be monotony in such large flat areas, yet this is never the case—one never tires of so many sublimated colors.”
By the 1990s, Martin’s work moved toward abstraction, including major series created in the studio alongside large nudes and expressive landscapes of the Alpilles. In 1992, a significant exhibition at L’Atrium in Lyon highlighted this mature period. As René Déroudille noted that same year:
“Slowly but surely, he arrived at a sort of plenitude… reveling in an active solitude where he felt close to his deepest desires.”
In later years he returned to more figurative motifs—Japanese flowers, butterflies, still lifes, and the familiar landscapes of Eygalières—combining clarity, simplicity, and emotional resonance.
