Sargent, on Farm Road 457 five miles northwest of the Gulf of Mexico and twenty-four miles southeast of Bay City in the eastern corner of Matagorda County, was named for George Sargent, an Englishman who immigrated to Texas from Cornwall, England, in 1834. Sargent purchased some bottomland near Caney Creek in 1844 and built a house three or four miles inland from the Gulf between Caney Creek and Cedar Lake. Mission San Jose in San Antonio is known for spectacular architecture, but the dramatic shadow cast by one simple palm tree shows the light and shadow in the painting. Founding the “Queen of the Missions” In 1719, Father Margil de Jesús, a seasoned Franciscan missionary, was at Mission San Antonio de Valero (today’s Alamo), awaiting the opportunity to re-establish missions in east Texas. Before too long, he saw need for another mission in the San Antonio River valley. He wrote the Marqués de Aguayo, then governor of the Province of Coahuila and Texas, requesting permission to establish a second mission south of San Antonio de Valero. He felt he was prepared to establish this mission at once as he had necessary church goods with him, even a statue of Saint Joseph. The Marqués agreed and founding ceremonies took place on February 23, 1720. On February 23, 1720 the Writ of Possession was signed for this mission, read the Writ of Possession here. Leaders of three Indian bands that wanted to come into the mission were appointed governor, judge, and sheriff in the new community of San José y San Miguel de Aguayo. Father Margil entrusted the care of the project to Father Núñez and two soldiers. The building of the limestone church, with its extraordinary Spanish colonial Baroque architecture and statuary began in 1768 — the peak of this mission’s development. At that time there were 350 Indians residing in 84 two-room apartments. Golden Treetops Conejos River in southern Colorado cottonwood trees sun rays 8" x 10" Framed The 93-mile-long Conejos River, a tributary of the Rio Grande, drains the eastern San Juan Mountains, which features some of the San Luis Valley’s most incredible scenery. Flowing from snowmelt beginning just northeast of Pagosa Springs, the Conejos meets up with the Rio Grande about 15 miles southeast of Alamosa; just south of there, it’s dammed at the Platoro Reservoir, which controls flooding and irrigation for San Luis Valley agriculture. Much of Conejos County was ceded to the United States in land grants from the Mexican government in the mid-19th century, and settlements along the river popped up here, thanks in part to plentiful fishing. Mostly wide and shallow, the river only occasionally has steep descents, and near Antonito, Colorado, it’s home to some truly spectacular fly-fishing. The beautiful, remote Conejos River Valley, just west of tiny Antonito, Colorado, is home to rugged cliffs, including The Pinnacles (a popular whitewater rafting destination), and wide-open meadows perfect for casting. It’s basically home to every type of trout imaginable, and it’s not hard to see why fly-fishermen come from all over the American West to check out the Conejos. Provenance Consigned to the gallery by private collectors Signed "Marion Kavanagh Wachtel" lower right Description Marion Kavanagh was a pupil of William Keith in San Francisco who, upon learning of her move to Southern California, urged her to contact Pasadena artist Elmer Wachtel. A romance blossomed and the two were married in 1904. During their marriage, out of respect for her husband, Marion Wachtel painted in watercolor, giving Elmer Wachtel the honor of painting in the more “serious” medium of oil. After the untimely passing of her husband and a period of grieving, Marion took up oil painting in 1930, working both en plein air and in the studio. This masterful plein air painting is a poetic interpretation of the snow-capped mountains in Grand Teton National Park...
