About the Item
Paris: Street Cafe Society
by Henri Miloch (1898-1979)
signed lower right
watercolour and gouache painting on artist's paper, unframed
Sheet:: 9.75 x 12.5 inches
Charming painting by the highly regarded painter, Henri Miloch. It depicts a vibrant street scene with bustling cafes and cars. This one is signed. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Miloch. This one is undated but the body of Parisian work we have by this artist was dated in most cases, with this style, from the later post-war part of the 1940's....mainly around 1948.
Henri Miloch was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1898 but studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Society of French Artists. His life and work was very much centred in Brittany, in north west France, much of his work portrays Breton maritime life in the various ports, and local town observations, especially in the Concarneau area where he worked and exhibited for much of his artistic career. From 1959 he also had a workshop in Tours (Val de Loire).
condition report:
No tears or creases (corners have very tiny folds, to be expected from years of storage. The paper manufacturers blindmark is slightly visible through the paint along the lower edge of the painting. Colour is good, strong, and clear.

PROVENANCE
Sale: Sotheby´s Olympia London, 20 October 2006
Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall.
His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33.
Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years.
In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful.
His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...
