About the Item

A wonderful view of a river landscape with a rustic cottage and pollarded trees by Henri Sieurac. It isa rare, early and very fresh landscape by this Parisian artist which may well have been painted in the countryside around Barbizon, near the river Loing. Henry Sieurac had studied with his father, François Joseph Sieurac , and of Paul Delaroche. He exhibited at the Salon between 1848 and 1863. He was the last member of the circle of dear friends of Johan Barthold Jongkind, the painter of landscapes and forerunner of Impressionism. The writers and critics Théophile Gautier , Paul de Saint-Victor and Arsène Houssaye all spoke of Sieurac's work with enthusiasm: Théophile Gautier 's personal collection included at least one work by the artist. Work by Sieurac are now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, the Museums of the Cities of Chalon sur Saone, Aix en Provence, Dijon, and in numerous official buildings and cathedrals.
