About the Item

This bright and cheerful painting is notated as “A Boating Party - Sudbury River”. It is by listed American artist Henry Orne Rider (1860-1943). Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Rider studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, followed by the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Academie Julian in Paris. He exhibited locally in Boston at the Art Club and the Newton Club in 1895-6. He taught in Newton and Dedham as well. The painting depicts a fine summer scene with a verdant landscape along the sparkling Sudbury River. A party of three boats is the center of focus in the river, with five or six persons. The impressionist depiction of the boats and their passengers is quite charming. (The Sudbury River is a 33 mile long tributary of the Concord River. It skirts the western suburbs of Boston from Concord at the north to Westboro at the south. It may very well be a scene near Framingham.) The painting is signed lower left. A very unusual attachment adhered to the back of the painting is a printed appraisal by the Art Appreciation Movement that seems to date to the 1930’s or slightly later. The judges pictured are John Sloan, Walter Pach, Alphaeus Cole, Howard Patterson and Reginald Marsh. The appraised amount from about 90 years ago is $50. Lifting the attachment to the top stretcher exposes the original title and signature by Henry Orne Rider on the back of the canvas. The oil on canvas measures 14” x. 18”. It is in good cleaned condition. The canvas does exhibit some minor vertical ripples, mainly along the top edge. They do not detract much from the overall painting from a distance away. The frame is walnut, with a gold liner. It is in good condition for its age, with no issues to report. Overall framed dimensions are 19” x 23”. This charming view of the Sudbury River in suburban Boston takes one back over 100 years to a slower lifestyle and genteel way of life for the upper-middle class. It is ready to hang on the wall of your choice to enjoy.

Fine Impressionist American School Oil on Canvas; Family Picnic or Outing, 1925
Located in Baltimore, MD
This lovely impressionist painting portrays what appears to be a family outing or picnic. There are many beautifully dressed women with their children in a park setting. Oddly, what appears to be missing are men, or their husbands. Perhaps it’s a women’s organization that included their young children. The scene must depict late spring or summer, given the foliage and their beautiful dresses. The colors are bright and cheerful and the late impressionist style is clearly evident. The artist appears to have signed the painting lower left, but it is very difficult to completely decipher. The date, 1925, seems to be clearer. All in all, this work is a one-of-a-kind period painting that will enhance any sophisticated room or setting. The frame is a soft lemon gold period cove frame that may be just a bit older than the work by about 10 years. This work has been recently professionally repaired, cleaned and varnished. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. There are a few professional repairs to the canvas, only visible from the patches shown on the backside. The frame has a few minor blemishes here and there, expected with its age. The canvas measures 18” x 22” and the overall framed dimensions are 24 1/2” x 28 1/2”. Visible on the reverse side is a vintage label that reads “Art...

Rare Southern Painting of the French Broad River, North Carolina ca 1890
Located in Baltimore, MD
This is an unsigned, but rare, late 19th century oil on canvas of a view of the French Broad River in North Carolina. It is amongst the world’s oldest rivers. The scene depicted is mountainous and the water is swiftly moving. This would put the location at the northern end of its course, north of Asheville and near the North Carolina and Tennessee border. Much like the Hudson River School in...
