An important Irish Modernist oil on canvas painting by Henry Robertson Craig (1816-1984), titled "Young Bathers", circa 1960.
This very beautiful painting of children seated on the beach, with other figures bathing is the sea, under a warm blue sky. The painting is very sensitively composed and is an exceptional example of one of Ireland's most respected modernist painters; Henry Robertson Craig along with his long time companion Patrick Hennessy (1915-1980).
The painting of large size at 34" tall x 39" wide, it is housed in the original dark blue polychrome
gilded carved hardwood frame, it is signed lower left " H Robertson Craig" and titled to the verso. Condition is excellent, this very appealing painting is ready to hang on your wall.
Henry Robertson Craig was a very talented Scottish-Irish painter who studied at Dundee College of Art before moving to Ireland in 1947. Robertson Craig exhibited in Dublin from the 1950s. He showed frequently with the Richie Hendriks Gallery and later the David Hendriks Gallery. He worked as a landscape and portrait painter primarily. Elected as a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1955, Robertson Craig’s work is represented in major public collections including; Dublin City Gallery, Irish Museum Modern Art and the National Self Portrait Collection, Dublin City Gallery, University of Limerick, Boston College Museum of Art, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and New Haven, Yale Center for British Art, John F. Kennedy Center, Phoenix Art Museum, Brian P. Burns Collection
