About the Item
Henry Walcott Boss (American, 1820-1916)
Woodland Tranquility
Oil on canvas, signed “Boss” lower right
dated 1896
In Woodland Tranquility, Henry Walcott Boss offers a masterfully composed meditation on nature’s quietude. Three deer occupy a sun-dappled forest glade, their presence both delicate and assured. One drinks from a clear stream in the foreground, while the others stand poised beneath towering trunks, bathed in the filtered light of early autumn. The palette is rich yet restrained: verdant greens mingle with russet hints, suggesting seasonal transition without overt drama.
Boss’s brushwork is confident and naturalistic, capturing the texture of bark, the shimmer of water, and the softness of undergrowth with studied precision. His treatment of light is particularly evocative—sunbeams pierce the canopy to illuminate the deer and foreground foliage, creating a gentle rhythm of shadow and glow that guides the viewer’s eye through the composition.
Known for his intimate portrayals of American woodland scenes, Boss imbues this work with a sense of reverence for the untamed landscape. The painting invites quiet contemplation, evoking the stillness and grace of wildlife undisturbed. It stands as a testament to the artist’s ability to merge technical skill with emotional resonance, offering a timeless glimpse into the harmony of forest life.
Henry Walcott Boss (1827–1916) was active in Binghamton, New York, and painted in a style that echoed the mid-century romanticism of artists like Asher B. Durand and John Frederick Kensett. His oeuvre includes genre scenes, portraits, seascapes, and still lifes, but he is best remembered for his woodland landscapes and animal studies—often rendered with a quiet realism and emotional restraint. His paintings typically feature serene natural settings, with wildlife integrated into the composition in a way that emphasizes harmony rather than drama.
Though Boss’s name rarely appears in major exhibition histories, his work has attracted regional attention and has been sold at auction with modest gains but consistent interest. His auction high is $$7,800. Notable examples include Landscape with Cows and Woodland Stream, both of which demonstrate his ability to capture light, texture, and atmosphere with precision. His paintings often feature pastoral subjects—deer, cattle, streams, and forest interiors—suggesting a deep affinity for solitude and the rhythms of rural life.

Autumn Landscape
By William Louis Sonntag Sr. 1
Located in Milford, NH
A wonderful Autumn landscape likely of the Hudson River Valley by the revered American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. He traveled twice to Europe in the 1850’s to improve his skills, eventually settling in New York City. He joined the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited his works for forty years. His mature works identify him with the Hudson River School of landscape painters. A romantic and naturalistic painter of his surroundings, Sonntag also created idealized paintings of Roman ruins, recalling his European trips of earlier years.
Sonntag was an Associate (1860) and Academician (1861) at the National Academy of Design, and a member of the American Watercolor Society, Artists Fund Society, and the American Art Union...
