An American School painter whose prolific career spanned eight decades, Kornfeld (1915 – 2001) helped forge a new style referred to by art critics as “California Modernism.” Born in Great Falls, Mont., Kornfeld trained at Los Angeles’ prestigious Chouinard School of Art with Palmer Schoppe, who became a lifelong friend. Kornfeld had California as his inspiration, capturing the iconic and quintessential landscape, structures or festivals. However, his signature is capturing the essence of landscapes with surreal colors and vibrant interpretations of everyday scenery.
Kornfeld has journeyed to China, Sweden, France, Greece, England, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States, painting the landscape and its architecture as he saw them in colorful, faceted and geometric shapes, alluding to Cubism and Impressionism. In the latter part of his life, Kornfeld returned to California and using broad, chromatic palette, captured the brilliant light on the coast, hills, valleys of California.
With bold use of color and loose, flat brushstrokes -- Kornfeld’s uniquely modernist aesthetic presents each piece as a visually arresting interpretation of the moment.
Kornfeld's paintings can be found in private and public collections throughout the world. A selection of his exhibitions include – the Long Beach Museum of Art, The Downey Museum of Art, The U. S. Navy Museum (Washington D.C), Charles M. Russell Museum, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, The American Academy of Arts, and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund Tour)- International Tour.
