Rare pair of scagliola panels, landscape views with ruins, Italy, half of the 18th Century.
With their original carved wood frames, lacquered and gilded with gold leaf. Original wrought iron attachments.
They depict two landscape views reminiscent of large lakes in the foothills of the Alps, bustling with fishermen, villages and ruins.
Exceptional state of preservationy .
Scagliola is an Italian word, derived from a chalk found in abundance in northern Italy, and whose
main feature is the thin-sheet structure in the form of scales, which is the result of the deposition of
marine sediments accumulated over centuries and centuries. These layers or flakes were so perfect and thin that in
past they were used in the construction of the windows of some churches. The light that passes through
these thin layers creates effects of such beauty that the mineral has been called selenite (from Selene, moon in
greek), or Pietra de la luna, moonstone.
Selenite was collected then reduced to a very fine powder, Scagliola precisely. The Craftspeople
italians preferred this gypsum because of its very pure white and degree of fineness. This
plaster was mainly used for artwork, particularly in the famous inlaid panels created in
Italy during the Renaissance.
The main reason for the invention of scagliola comes from the fact that valuable materials, such as the
marble, were very hard to find, very expensive and difficult to transport.
Replacing the original with a product that could imitate it perfectly, was cheaper and offered a
more malleable product that artisans could color to their liking. The works in scagliola
reached a level of mastery that enabled them to surpass, at times, hard stone inlay.
From Emilia-Romagna, where scagliola first appeared in the 17th century, the technique spread
then in Tuscany, Lombardy, Campania and other Italian regions.
In 18th-century Florence, Enrico Hugford (1695-1771) and his pupil, Lamberto Cristiano Gori (1730-
1801), were among the great masters of Florentine scagliola, transforming the technique, more pictorial and less
imitative, from simple craftsmanship to true art.
