Mid Century Modern Impasto Oil Painting -- Venice at Sunset with St. Mark's Basilica
Wonderful and evocative modern painting of Venice with gondolas and St. Marks Basilica by postwar and contemporary artist Huib Van Vugt (Vught) (Dutch, 1923-2008), circa 1950. Cobalt blue and grey hues with yellow highlights reflecting off St. Marks Basilica's dome and surrounding buildings. The use of the palette knife imbues an impasto texture adding another layer of interest and depth to the scene. The overall composition and palette is balanced and pleasing. He often created a dream world. His pure use of color has a powerful appearance. Fauvism was an important source of inspiration for Van Vugt and a further stimulus for his fascination with color.

The Stichting Kunstschilder Huib van Vugt (SKHVV) Foundation, was founded in 2009 with the aim of keeping the work of the painter and draftsman Huib van Vugt alive and remembered. The foundation published a book about his life and work in 2011. In 2014, the foundation published a second book in which art historian Merel van den Nieuwenhof places Huib van Vugt's work in an art historical context.
Huib van Vugt was born on 20 April 1923 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands as the youngest of six children. His parents had a bread and pastry shop. After primary school, Huib went to the KTA (Royal School for Art, Technology and Craft) in Den Bosch, where he successfully completed the art department. During this training he took private lessons with portrait painter Wim van der Plas, a pupil of Isidore Opzomer from Antwerp.
Then he followed the training as a drawing teacher at the Rijksnormaalschool in Amsterdam. From 1953 to 1968 he was employed as a purser at KLM. From 1981 until his death on 4 October 2008 he lived with his friend Emile Consten, first in Harmelen and later in Oisterwijk.
