This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. In Gondoliers III, Ian Hargreaves captures the quiet choreography of Venetian life, presenting gondolas gently tethered against shimmering water under a wide, luminous sky. Painted in oil on canvas, the scene balances architectural rhythm with human presence, allowing the figures to feel incidental rather than dominant. The composition reflects Hargreaves’ contemporary realist approach, where observation and atmosphere are prioritised over narrative detail. The colour palette is cool and expansive, led by crystalline blues and turquoise greens that describe the movement of water with remarkable sensitivity. Soft whites and pale stone tones anchor the distant architecture, while subtle accents of red and warm ochre punctuate the composition, drawing the eye without disturbing the overall calm. Light is treated with precision, dancing across the water’s surface in broken reflections. This work evokes a sense of stillness suspended in time, inviting the viewer to linger within the moment rather than pass through it. Hargreaves’ refined brushwork and tonal restraint lend the painting a quiet confidence, making it both contemplative and visually immersive. Artist Biography: Born in 1957, Ian studied at Bournemouth College of Art. At the age of 21 he set off across Europe for ten months, recording his travels in watercolour. "Rendez-vous Ventetien", Gerard Valtier, Oil on Canvas, Venice, Gondola, Street
By Gerard Valtier
Located in Dallas, TX
"Rendez-vous Ventetien" by Gerard Valtier is an original oil on canvas that measures 29x36 inches. This impressionistic painting uses warm vivid colors to create a scene of gondola's on a canal in Venice. Many appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors. Seething with colors, sparkling, blazing, molten gold: the whole mystery of Gerard Valtier’s painting lies in the working of this colorful living chemistry, where the thickening cover of the glaze catches the reflections of the light, which progressively becomes incandescent. The contrasting blue and yellow, basically naturalistic colors - characteristic of the impressionist palette - create a feeling of bedazzlement which send out their own light, directly imitating the natural effects of light itself. Thus, the property of the color, the interaction of colors as well as their power to create some light, definitely are the basis of Valtier’s work. The artist can paint everything: barges along the quay, the busy crowds, Venice and its carnival, the bride and her procession - his whole painting is under the sign of the feast. Unlike Renoir or Cezanne, Valtier does not hesitate to use black as a true color, not one designed to soften or drain the pure color, as in the shadows. One will also appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors. Valtier has had exhibitions throughout the world and has received many awards. He paints from his studio in Arles, France. He is listed in Mayers, Akoun, La Cote des Peinteres, Bordas International, and Financial Art.
