About the Item
A great little winter scene painting of a marketplace in Krakow, Poland by Ignacy Pinkas.
Pinkas was born in Poland. As a young man he worked odd jobs, including joining the traveling circus.
Pinkas showed talent as an artist at a young age, and, in 1907, he painted a portrait of Archduke Franz Józef. The money he earned from the sale in this painting allowed him to become a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.
After three years Pinkas left for Paris to study art. He returned in 1912, and began a career as fighter in various military institutions. He was interned at Witkowice Interment Camp by the Ukrainian People's Republic.
Throughout his service he created mainly portraits of commanders and comrades-in-arms.
After 1920, Pinkas focused on landscape paintings, traveling around Poland, and to the Baltic Sea and France.
He remained based out of Krakow until his death.
This work is of the marketplace in Krakow, and is a strong and brooding little painting.
It is an oil on artist's board, and housed in a vintage frame.
