About the Item
Serene sunset over the waters near Smögen on Sweden's west coast, with the sun setting just behind the island of Hållö and its lighthouse by female artist Ingeborg Westfelt-Eggertz. Signed "I. Westfelt-Eggertz" and bears an indistinct date, possibly 1893 or 1903. Executed in oil on canvas laid on cardboard.
Born in Stockholm 1855, Westfelt-Eggertz pursued her artistic education at the Technical School and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1873 and 1880. Seeking further refinement, she studied under Raphaël Collin and Gustave Courtois in Paris by 1883. In 1887, she established her own school in Paris catering to young ladies of the nobility and the stock market aristocracy, while also contributing illustrations to the Delagrave publishing company. After seven years in Paris, she returned to Stockholm in 1890. In 1893, she married editor August Emil Eggertz and subsequently lived in Visby from 1893 to 1897, then in Landskrona, and finally settled in Gothenburg on the westcoast in 1903. In each of these cities, she founded painting schools for women while continuing her own artistic endeavors.
Westfelt-Eggertz received several awards throughout her career, including a gold medal in oil painting at Arcachon in 1888, a silver medal at Versailles in 1889, and an honorable mention at Évreux. Her works are part of the collections at the Gothenburg Art Museum, Halland Art Museum, Bohuslän Museum in Uddevalla, and the National Museum in Stockholm.
The painting's subject, Smögen, is a picturesque island village on Sweden's west coast, renowned for its vibrant summer atmosphere and exceptional seafood. The area comprises several closely situated islands, including Smögen Island at its center.
Depicted in the painting, Hållö Island lies just outside Smögen and is home to the historic Hållö Lighthouse. First lit in 1842, the lighthouse is the oldest in Bohuslän. The island is celebrated for its natural beauty, clear turquoise waters, and unique rock formations, making it a popular destination for summer visitors.
