About the Item
This expressive oil pastel sketch on paper captures the atmospheric essence of Alcalá de Henares, Spain—the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, the legendary author of Don Quixote. Rendered in a striking monochromatic palette, the composition evokes a sense of nostalgia and history, blending bold, gestural strokes with delicate tonal shading. The focal point appears to be a historic building, possibly reminiscent of Alcalá’s renowned medieval and Renaissance architecture, its textured façade and arched openings lending a timeless presence to the scene.
In the foreground, a gnarled, sprawling tree stretches across the composition, its dramatic, almost surreal form contrasting against the rigid structure, symbolizing the passage of time and the persistence of nature. This interplay of light and shadow, structure and organic form, reflects the literary spirit of Cervantes’ world—where reality and imagination merge.
Executed with a raw, almost abstract quality, this piece invites viewers to explore its rich textures and expressive energy. The use of oil pastel enhances the tactile depth, allowing for both crisp detailing and fluid blending. A compelling tribute to Alcalá’s cultural heritage, this artwork is a collectible piece for admirers of historical cityscapes, literary history, and modern expressionist interpretations.
The sketch is sold unframed. Signed on the left bottom corner and on the back. It will require framing for display.
Irina Forrester is a contemporary Russian-born British artist. She and her family has moved to Singapore from London seven years ago. She has received a formal education at art school in Russia, but her young family and work commitments meant that she had a long break before picking up her brushes again.
Moving to Singapore allowed Irina free time to renew her interest in art and she has spent the last few years exploring various options to brush up on her skills and move forward. To blow away the initial cobwebs, she attended a series of short courses at LASALLE and NAFA and is now an active member of some of Singapore’s life figure/portrait drawing groups to keep her eyes sharp.
Most of Irina’s work is representational but recently she has been looking to shift it towards a fine balance between abstraction and realism. Her subject matter covers a wide range from still lifes and landscapes to portraiture and life drawing sketches. She prefers oils to other mediums for its versatility in application but also enjoys acrylics, gouache, charcoal and ink.
Irina exhibits regularly (40+ shows and art fairs in the last 3 years) and her works are in private collections in the UK, the USA, Europe, Russia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Artist’s statement
As a visual storyteller, my paintings are the illustrations of my life’s diary—intimate reflections of the moments that shape me. Painting from life is at the core of my practice, capturing subjects ranging from plein air landscapes in Singapore and abroad to more abstract explorations in recent works.
Each piece is an emotional response to the world around me, where the act of putting feeling onto canvas becomes a journey of discovery. This approach results in a diverse body of work, spanning portraits, life drawing sketches, landscapes, and still lifes.
Through my art, I strive to preserve fleeting moments, transforming them into visual narratives that connect emotion, memory, and experience.

Olive Grove with Cypress Trees - Charcoal Drawing, Greece, Island Black
White
By George Tzannes
Located in New York, NY
This 22 x 31.5 inches black and white chalk painting on canvas represents a Greek landscape. Olive and cypress trees populate the landscape. Tzannes is an American painter of Greek origins. In his twenties, he visited Kythera, the Greek island of his father's birth. Since then, the island has become the primary reference of his creativity. Using black and white to represent this landscape gives the mighty hundred-year-old olive trees a monumental presence. The viewer is drawn into the timeless, spiritual quality of the Greek landscape. Despite the absence of color, Tzannes' mastery of drawing creates a tangible effect of the Greek light...
