About the Item

Fangst Bat by Jack Gray The rough waters of the Scotia Sea are captured in this painting by famed marine painter, Jack Gray. The boat is a fangst bat or catcher boat used for whaling. Jack Lorimer Gray is renowned for his realistic and expertly painted marine art. This painting has fine detailed execution of the boat's rigging and the mist of a rough sea. Framed in a period wood frame. Signed lower right "Jack L. Gray". Inscribed to verso "'Fangst Bat' (Catcher Boat) - Whaler in the Scotia Sea - (Off the Coast of Antarcta (sic))." Jack Gray (1927-1981) was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, and spent his life living along the water from Halifax to West Palm Beach, Florida. He attended the Nova Scotia College of Art for one year, but left to work on fishing boats. He was an excellent sailor, which is reflected in his paintings of fishermen, boats, and the piers and buildings of the waterfront. He designed floating boat studios from which he painted and lived.
