About the Item
A mid-century American Realist scene of children playing on the railroad entitled, London Round House. The chaotic scene of children rambunctiously playing is suspected to be set in London, Ontario. This location was a short distance from where the artist Jack Steele (1919-2003) lived in Detroit, Michigan. It was purchased with guidance from the artist, instructor, and historian, Michael Hall.

Jack Keijo Steele produced work throughout his life that focused on the subject of working-class life in America. At eight years of age, Steele moved with his family from the Finnish-American community of Ironwood in northern Michigan, to a working-class neighborhood near Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from high school, Steele supported himself as a laborer, working in one of the city’s automotive assembly plants, drawing and painting in his spare time. His artwork is deeply rooted in the regional consciousness shared by the working people who made Michigan an automotive manufacturing powerhouse.

- Condition:Good Condition. Examined by the naked eye shows no loss of paint or craquelure. There is surface dust and airborne grime visible, as well as surface distortion of an undulating kind (not creased). It has previously been lined with acid-free board.
