About the Item

Provenance Consigned to the gallery by private collectors Signed "Jack Wilkinson Smith" lower left Description Jack Wilkinson Smith was a New York-based illustrator before moving out West around 1906 seeking the mythical Western experience. He settled in the San Gabriel Valley town of Alhambra in the small art colony known as Artists’ Alley. Smith’s marvelous, loosely-painted, rugged landscape embodies adventure. This painting, circa 1927, shows a beckoning trail meandering up and over a rocky slope dotted with pine while heading in the direction of a distant mountain vista. Overall, a memorable interpretation of nature’s bounty and serenity in the remote Western landscape. When asked about California, Smith responded, “Why go elsewhere? Where are mountains nobler than the Sierras?" Frame Wood with gold gilt finish. On Verso "Katherine Norris F.A." taped on frame “American Legacy Fine Arts” label White card with title and artist's name Hanging tag, possibly for auction, ID # "37152-B10" Exhibited Early California Masters: Paintings from the Katherine A. Untitled (Snow-capped Mountains) – Grand Teton National Park, c. 1930s
By Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel
Located in Pasadena, CA
Provenance Consigned to the gallery by private collectors Signed "Marion Kavanagh Wachtel" lower right Description Marion Kavanagh was a pupil of William Keith in San Francisco who, upon learning of her move to Southern California, urged her to contact Pasadena artist Elmer Wachtel. A romance blossomed and the two were married in 1904. During their marriage, out of respect for her husband, Marion Wachtel painted in watercolor, giving Elmer Wachtel the honor of painting in the more “serious” medium of oil. After the untimely passing of her husband and a period of grieving, Marion took up oil painting in 1930, working both en plein air and in the studio. This masterful plein air painting is a poetic interpretation of the snow-capped mountains in Grand Teton National Park...
