Certainly a pupil of Jean Pillement, Jacques Bertaux owes his fame, or at least the fact that his name has remained in history, to his large compositions created around 1770-1800: The Storming of the Tuileries in 1792, The Imperial Procession on its Way to Notre-Dame for the Coronation in 1804, and The Hunt of Duke Louis-Philippe of Orléans in 1773. Most of these large works are in French museums. Besides these sumptuous compositions, Bertaux painted numerous battle scenes and pastoral scenes, very similar in style and color to Pillement's.
Our two paintings, presented on their original canvases, depict scenes of a brawl (rather than battles) between brigands. Musket fire, mismatched attire, and reckless charges are all present in these two vibrant scenes, contrasted by the pastel tones surrounding the subject. To attribute these elements to Pillement's art would be redundant…
