About the Item
Oil on panel view of Lourdes in France by Jacques Buecher. The painting is signed, titled and dated bottom left. There is an inscription to the back of the board top left.
A very charming view of this iconic town of pilgrimage in France. Buecher has set a monolithic rock as central to the composition, then leading from it the main street and houses with their terracotta rooves and painted facades. Towering above it all in the distance is a church and tower. Buecher has used blocks of colour in a colourfield technique to give the impression of scale and distance, greens, browns and reds, a play between light and shadow. There are influences of the Fauvists and the Impressionists all coming together in a charming composition.
