A beautiful mid 20th century oil on board depicting Hope Cove in South Devon by the important English artist Edward Pullee. Superbly painted view of this well known beauty spot which is very popular with both British and overseas holiday makers. The work is signed lower right and further inscribed and signed on the reverse. Presented in its original frame. The youngest college principal in the country when, in 1934, he was appointed to Gloucester School of Art, he went on to be principal at Portsmouth (1939), Leeds (1945) and Leicester (1956-67). Born in Pimlico, south-west London, the eldest of three sons of a police officer, he was educated at Holy Trinity school in Chelsea, and, after the family moved to Dover, at St Martin's School. This is a lively scene with sailor in a striped t-shirt bringing in his ropes, as a sun bather in swimming trunks chats with a figure holding a large pole, possibly a sand spike or fishing rod. Locals go about their business in the background and mamas hang their washing from balconies to dry.
