About the Item
James Brade Sword (1839 - 1915)
Couple in the Field
Oil on canvas
16 x 20 inches
Signed lower left
After a childhood in Macao, China, James Brade Sword started out in life, after high school in Philadelphia, employed by a civil engineer on various surveys and earth-moving projects. In his early twenties, after sketching in his spare time, he soon turned to the study of painting.
He began with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1861. By 1863, he had studied with George W. Nicholson, a landscape painter, and was deeply involved in painting. His earlier engineering projects had included the survey of Atchafalaya Bay in Louisiana; enlarging the Union Canal and digging a railroad tunnel, both in Pennsylvania.
Sword was born in 1839 in Philadelphia. It would remain his home base, though he painted in various spots in the Northeast, including Eastern Pennsylvania, the Jersey shore, New York's Adirondack Mountains, and Newport, Rhode Island. He was a popular painter of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and genre, with pictures of outdoor sports and children, who exhibited in New York and his home city.
James Brade Sword died in 1915.
His active life in art is reflected by his memberships in the Artists' Fund Society, Philadelphia Society of Artists, and Art Club of Philadelphia, of which he was a founder. His work is in the collection of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His 1911 portrait of J. W. Jones, speaker of the House, still hangs in the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

James Brade Sword
Philadelphia artist, James Brade Sword studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and with George Washington Nicholson, noted Philadelphia landscapist. Sword visited Conanicut Island, Rhode Island in 1881 and spent summers there, painting along the shoreline. Long Pond on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusettts, is the rare and breathtaking view depicted here, painted at the tranquil moment of dusk. Sword exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1876-1906), in the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 and was founder of the Art Club of Philadelphia, president of the Philadelphia Society of Artists, and the Artists' Fune Society. His work is in numerous public and private collections.

19th century Antique English Victorian Summer Harvest landscape, with figures.
By John Mundell
Located in Woodbury, CT
19th century English Antique Victorian Summertime Harvest landscape, with figures.
John Mundell was a British painter of landscapes as well as river scenes and coastal views. It is suggested that Mundell was a pseudonym of John James Wilson. Mundell’s work was vigorous, bright, and attractive and compares favorably with the work of many of the better artists of his time.
This is a very fine example of the artist's work. It is a rare composition for the artist as he mostly painted marines.
This piece is framed in its original antique gold leaf frame
