Jean Baptiste Coene is a Belgian painter and the son of genre and history painter Constantin Coene. He studied with his father at the Antwerp Academy and reached success as a painter of Romantic landscapes featuring woods, rivers, lakes, and mountains. He exhibited at the Brussels Salon in the 1840s.
Our painting is a fine example of the Belgian Romantic school of landscapes from the mid-19th century, with a highly decorative yet atmospheric feel. Noteworthy are the beautiful colors (particularly the beautiful blue of the lake), the fine way of painting (the beautifully painted trees and vegetation), the beautifully detailed composition (the small houses, the boats on the lake, and the figures near the large house), and the beautiful atmosphere of this painting (notably the beautiful distant mountains to the right and left of the composition).
