Jean-Baptiste Roubaud was an acclaimed French artist, born in Marseille on 21st March 1871.
He was active in the later part of the 19th century and into the early 20th century, focusing on subjects drawn from coastal Provence, marine scenes, and landscapes. His skill led to his appointment as “Peintre du ministère de la Marine” — the Painter of the Ministry of the Navy and he was awarded the honour Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1936.
Roubaud’s work often depicts tranquil marine or coastal settings: harbours, sailboats, fishermen, shorelines and light effects characteristic of the Mediterranean.
He exhibited soft, poetic atmospheres with calming colour palettes, especially in scenes along the Var coast (for example Cap Sicié) and other parts of Provence. As well as marine scenes, he painted views of Marseille and its environs (e.g. the Prado, Corniche, etc.).
Roubaud exhibited at many exhibits and salons in France including the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1927-1932, where he was a member. His work was also shown in cities including Bordeaux, Calais, Dijon, Lyon, Marseille, Oran, Geneva and Buenos Aires. He earned a Silver Medal at an exhibition in 1932 for pieces such as those exhibited in “Châteauneuf-lès-Martigues”.
Roubaud also did architectural work — for instance he decorated the Palais du Rhin in Strasbourg.
Roubaud died in 1936.

This beautiful original oil on panel is by French artist Jean Baptiste Roubaud (1871–1936), celebrated for his evocative views of the Mediterranean and Provençal coastline. The painting, entitled Martigues, Provence and dated 1908, is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right section.
Roubaud captures the charm of the fishing town of Martigues, often called the “Venice of Provence,” with his vibrant and impressionistic brushwork. In the foreground, a fisherman sits in a small green boat upon the sandy shore, casting his line into the glittering sea. To the right, colourful boats rest against golden rocks, while the background reveals distant mountains, a lively shoreline, and sailing boats gliding across the water.
Roubaud’s palette — warm ochres, soft greens and cool blues — evokes the Provençal shoreline at midday, while his textured impasto and brisk, directional strokes convey movement in both water and wind. As an authentic, dated example of Roubaud’s coastal work, this 1908 panel is a fine demonstration of early 20th-century French landscape painting and will appeal to collectors of Provençal art, Mediterranean seascapes and historic French impressionist-influenced works.

Henri Joseph Pauwels was a notable twentieth century Flemish painter, rooted in Impressionist traditions. He was born on 16 December 1903 in Sleidinge near Antwerp. He died on 12 March 1983 in Beveren-Waas.
Pauwels trained academically in Paris, then in private studios in Antwerp. His early works demonstrate his academic training, but he was heavily influenced by Impressionism and his later work has a more vibrant palette and airy, loose brushwork. He was known for his plein air technique, as shown in this piece. Pauwels exhibited widely, mainly in Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam and was successful both before and after WWII. Some of his works are held in public collections, including the Ghent Museum.
His works were highly collectable amongst his contemporaries in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. He is known for a range of genres but is best known for his large canvases of romantic landscapes and country life. He also painted harbour scenes and some still life. His works remain collectable for their optimistic, poetic and nostalgic views of wholesome country life.
