About the Item

Jean-Charles GRANDJEAN Active between 1833 and 1857 Oil on canvas 33 x 41 cm (46 x 54 cm with frame) Signed and dated lower right “Grandjean / 1835” Beautiful Restoration period frame in gilded wood Born in Paris, Jean-Charles Grandjean studied with Louis-Etienne Watelet. He was a landscape painter who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1833 to 1857, mainly views of Switzerland and Italy. When Corot returned to Italy in 1834, he was accompanied by Jean-Charles Grandjean, whom he had met in Soissons the previous year. This painter who is said to have “a voluptuous temperament and a taste for living well” traveled with Corot to Italy from the summer of 1834 to the fall of 1834. After spending time in Genoa, Florence and Venice, they visited Milan and the lakes north of Milan which may be the subject of our painting. As for the sculpture represented in the painting, it seems to be a saint or a knight. He has a red cross on his chest and his face sems to be hidden by a helmet. One of the two characters in the foreground removes his hat at the sight of the sculpture as a sign of respect. The chosen moment of the day is dusk. The beautiful lighting effect is typical of the Romantic painting, as well as the choice of a picturesque site and the emphasis on the representation of the link between man and nature.

WAAGEN German Romantic Landscape Tegern Lake Montains Bavaria Mid 19th

Adalbert Waagen Munich, 1834 – Bertesgaden, 1898 On the shores of Lake Tegern in Southern Bavaria Oil on panel Signed and dated lower left "A. Waagen. 1857" Located on the reverse "Gegend am Tegern See" 25 x 40 cm (39 x 53 cm with frame) Very good condition Beautiful 19th-century carved and gilded wood frame Adalbert Waagen was a German landscape painter. He painted primarily landscapes, and more specifically mountain landscapes. His style was influenced by his teacher, Zimmermann, through Joseph Anton Koch. Leopold, Prince Regent of Bavaria, bestowed upon him the honorary title of Royal Professor in 1891. His works are held in the Martin von Wagner Museum, the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, and the Munich City Museum. Waagen first studied with Albert Zimmermann in Munich between 1855 and 1858. Our painting, dated "1857," dates from this period. After completing his studies in 1860, Waagen established his studio in Munich, in the home of his friend Karl Millner. He regularly undertook study trips with Hermann Krüger and other students to the mountains of Old Bavaria and Tyrol. Our painting, in fact, is set in southern Bavaria, "near Lake Tergen." Waagen's style became broader and more realistic at this time, both in its atmosphere and its use of color. Waagen became a central figure in the vibrant artistic circle of "Young Munich," alongside Otto Stöger, Theodor Pixis, Georg Kremplsetzer, August Spieß, Friedrich and Heinrich Lossow...
