About the Item
A beautiful mid 20th century French naïf oil on board depicting figures in a snow covered town, by Jean Fous. Titled "Winter Walk" in French on the reverse.
The work is signed lower right and presented in a painted and gilded frame. Inscribed with location on the reverse.
Jean Fous is a well known French naïf artist who was featured in Anatole Jakovsky's ''Les Peintres Naïfs'', known as the bible of French naïf artists.
A brocanteur by trade, Fous met Jakovsky in the 1940's and quickly became his protege.

Jean Fous was the son of a picture framer living in the Rue du Dragon in Saint-Germain-des-Pres. Instead of following in his father's footsteps, he chose adventure; he travelled to the South of France and finally set up a stall in an open air market in the shade of St. Sernin Cathedral in Toulouse.
Later he returned to Paris and continued to sell in the flea-market of the Porte de Vanves. He is therefore the second 'naive' artist who was a seller in a second hand market, for Paul Lefebvre was another.
Fous's art is very personal, full of pictorial qualities. He is almost the only artist to have painted the Paris flea markets.
