About the Item
On offer is a moody glimpse of rural 19th-century France typical of the Barbizon School. Against a backdrop of a wintery pale golden sky, two men are fishing from the rocks above a reflective pond. The top of a sail, on the other side of reeded marshland, adds another dimension to the evocative background.
The painter, Jean Louis Petit (1795-1876) produced views of Paris, coastal scenes in Normandy, and general landscapes in oils and watercolors. As per the aged label affixed verso (photo #6), his works were collected by various museums around the country.
