DESCRIPTION
The painting depicts a stone building by the edge of a small stream, nestled in a lush, mountainous landscape evocative of the Pyrenees in the province of Lleida. The scene is set in Salardú, a village in the Vall d’Aran, whose traditional architecture is captured with notable fidelity and emotion.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joan Vila‑Puig was born in Sant Quirze del Vallès (Barcelona) in 1890 and died in Bellaterra in 1963. He was one of the most prominent Catalan landscape painters of the 20th century. He studied at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona and later at the Reial Acadèmia de Sant Ferran in Madrid.
His style evolved from realism influenced by Corot and Millet to a more atmospheric and expressive approach, akin to Joaquim Mir and Rusiñol, though he never veered into decorative fantasy. Vila‑Puig was a chronicler of the rural Catalan landscape, with a special affection for Vallès Occidental, Bages, and the Pyrenees.
His work received wide recognition during his lifetime, and his legacy has been institutionalized in his hometown through the Vila‑Puig Cultural Centre, which houses a permanent exhibition of his works.
