Joana Santamans (Barcelona, 1977) develops a painterly practice that does not aim to depict nature, but to activate its energy. Her work emerges from a physical and intuitive relationship with the natural world, understood not as landscape, but as a living, mutable organism deeply connected to human experience.
Trained in design and creative illustration at Escola Eina, and shaped by extended periods in London, New York, and San Francisco, Santamans has progressively refined a distinct visual language in which gesture, color, and material operate as tools of knowledge. Her paintings are built through the body: each mark is an action, each layer a decision that moves between control and surrender.
Positioned between figuration and abstraction, her organic forms do not describe, but suggest. They evoke roots, bodies, sediments, and primordial structures—echoes of natural processes such as growth, erosion, and transformation. Color, vibrant and vital, functions as an emotional force, while pictorial matter becomes a territory in itself.
Working primarily with oil and mixed media on canvas, as well as large-scale murals, Santamans understands painting as a space for experimentation and resistance to the accelerated pace of the present. Her work has been exhibited in contexts where art engages in dialogue with architecture, design, and publishing, including The Room Studio, Miscelanea, and Fundació Espai Guinovart, consolidating an open and cross-disciplinary practice.
Her new body of work, Roots and Clay, marks a decisive shift toward a freer, more essential, and profound abstraction. In this series, painting further detaches from recognizable form to reconnect with what is primal: origin, earth, and the initial gesture.
